Brad Carter’s biggest fear is to have no variety in his life. In fact, he says any hint of a monotonous routine will kill him. Fortunately, he has been blessed with many diverse talents which have opened up many doors to many opportunities in his life, thus far. One such door opened for him at RMB, when he decided to leave the petrochemical industry and join the world of banking.
Brad is the quintessential multi-talented, multi-tasker, Jack of many trades. At school at St Stithians College he excelled academically by being the Dux Scholar and one of the top 50 IEB students in South Africa with six distinctions in his matric year. He continued his academic achievements by graduating with a First Class Honours B.Bus.Sci Information Systems degree at the University of Cape Town – garnering several awards along the way there too. A few years later he enrolled at the Gordon Institute of Business Science and completed his MBA cum laude, also top of his class.
Multi-tasker
It came as no surprise when Brad was selected to join the elite group of RMB Class Ofs in 2017. Brad has not just excelled academically throughout his career, but he has achieved many great milestones in sport – having successfully completed nine Comrades marathons (at the time of writing) and playing provincial squash. To prove he is truly an all-rounder and worthy of the RMB Class Of elite, he can also add playing the guitar and being the co-founder of his own company, Diski Zone (one of the fastest growing online platforms to bring football to the South African masses) to his impressive CV. Brad also tried his hand at poetry and was first published, at the mere age of 16, for his work titled: “Sarajevan Landscapes”.
Learn from the best
Upon joining the RMB family, Brad was immediately impressed with the lack of red tape in the bank:
“It is incredible to see how much freedom RMB staff members are given to basically – just be brilliant.”
Brad hopes to use the RMB Class Of platform “to add real value and make a tangible difference in the world.”
Brad became aware of the RMB Class Of Programme during his MBA studies. At the time he was at Sasol being involved with end-to-end high impact merger and acquisition activities in oil and gas, and the petrochemical industries. The opportunity to learn more about the financial aspects across industries, as well as the unstructured format of the RMB Class Of Programme won him over. He finds the RMB Class Of mandate to ask as many questions as you wish while being on the Programme, a great opportunity to learn from the best, but also sees it as an opportunity to ‘rattle a few cages’ – admits the maverick in him.
Although Brad has achieved quite a few milestones in his young life, there are still a few items on his bucket list, such as: finding more time to travel; running a sub-three hour marathon; kicking a soccer ball at the Anfield Stadium in Liverpool – and taking another small company to stand-alone sustainability.
Bright future
Brad is upbeat and excited about his future at RMB – especially to be part of a corporate and investment bank and the significant role the bank can potentially play in the global economy. He hopes to play his part in contributing to the bottom-line and to ultimately push the limits of his full potential and passion.
Brad says:
My guilty pleasure is to remove myself from the world by reading a good book (often while eating peanut butter straight from the jar), running or playing music
I enjoy reading fictional novels from time to time as I’m fascinated by immersing myself in all the layers and characters created by the author, but I also find a good autobiography really inspiring
My pet peeve is people who lose perspective and who make mountains out of molehills
If I could have one super hero power it would be to be Batman because although he has no real innate powers, he does rely on his genius intellect, physical prowess, detective skills, science and technology, vast wealth and indomitable will
The one thing I’ve learnt at school is how important it is to strike a balance between work and play
