Client challenge

EnviroServ is the largest private waste management business in sub-Saharan Africa. The business collects, analyses, treats and disposes of hazardous and general waste to treatment and disposal sites. It owns and operates treatment and disposal sites in South Africa, Mozambique and Uganda.

RMB leveraged its sell-side advisory expertise to jointly deliver an excellent disposal outcome for EnviroServ. RMB was able to attract strategic investor interest and became the go-to sell side adviser in this market as this is the largest waste management deal to date.

The buyers of EnviroServ are a consortium comprising SUEZ SA, Royal Bafokeng Holdings (Pty) Limited (RBH) and African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM). RMB served as co-financial adviser to EnviroServ and its private equity shareholders, led by Rockwood Private Equity (Rockwood), on the disposal of 100% of their interest in EnviroServ.

Rockwood is a leading South African private equity fund manager that focuses on taking substantial equity positions in medium to large sized companies that have experienced management teams.

SUEZ, a French company, is a world leader in water, waste and more generally the sustainable management of resources with operations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

RBH is a South African community investment company responsible for the management and development of the commercial assets of the Royal Bafokeng Nation.

AIIM is among the pre-eminent managers of private sector investments in African infrastructure assets with a current portfolio of over US$2.4billion in Africa.
