Michele Rolstone

Michele Rostone graduated from the Michaelis School for Fine Arts, UCT in 2010. Having sampled a number of creative industries, including film and illustration, she took up her first studio to pursue a career in art at the end of 2012. From there she opened the first African branch of Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School (part of an international brand of burlesque life drawing events).

Rolstone became a student at Judy Woodborne’s Intaglio Studio in 2013, and by 2015 was working as a printmaker from the studio. During her time as a member of the Intaglio studio she offered printmaking classes and workshops, as well as publishing editions for professional artists.

Rolstone parted from her duties at the print studio in 2019 to focus on establishing her personal practice. She was selected to participate in the Artist’s Career Bootcamp (funded by the NAC and facilitated by Art Source South Africa) at The Bag Factory in Johannesburg. By the end of 2019 Rolstone had moved to Johannesburg, joining the artist community of August House in Johannesburg CBD, where her studio is currently based.

Rolstone’s prints have been accepted into a number of International Print Exchanges as well as International Printmaking Biennales. One such submission was selected for further exhibition in Harlem, NYC, while another is now in the collection of the Muzeum Miasta Ostrowa Wielkopolskiego, Poland. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, both locally and abroad. In 2020 Rolstone extended her practice to collaborative curatorial projects, the first of which, Incognito Art House was featured on Latitudes Online (2020-221).

Rolstone is currently one of 12 women artists selected to participate in the RMB Talent Unlocked Programme which will be hosted at Circa Gallery, Everard Read, in Rosebank Johannesburg.
