Having grown up on a farm, Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe has been sculpting with whatever she could find ever since she can remember. She completed her BA Fine Art Honours degree at the University of Pretoria, with a major in sculpture and is currently completing her Masters Degree at the University of the Witwatersrand.
A constant theme of Prinsloo-Rowe's body of work, is an exploration of the sculpted human figure. She is intrigued by the way in which sculpture mimics the three dimensionality of the human presence and thus the powerful dialogue it invites - from human to human look-alike.
Prinsloo-Rowe is particularly interested in the capacity that sculpture has to freeze the transient into sculpted reality, thus keeping it alive.
The powerful, instinctive recognition that figurative sculpture elicits from the viewer has been explored with many layered interpretations being added, from ancient to contemporary art-making. Generating a deep reservoir of expression, this body of secondary interpretation, though time and culture, has made a profound impact on Prinsloo-Rowe's work.
Through her sculpture, Prinsloo-Rowe seeks to make everyday living more understandable, and more meaningful, by setting in place sculpted bodies as carriers of stories and dreams - honouring the past and hoping in the future.
