Muneer Ismail is FirstRand Limited’s Group Executive responsible for Corporate and Enterprise Banking and a member of the Strategy Executive Committee. He is responsible for the group’s strategy to service commercial and corporate clients in a more integrated way, which FirstRand believes will be key to further scaling the group’s corporate banking offerings.

 

Prior to joining FirstRand, Muneer held dual responsibilities as the Chief Executive Officer of HSBC in South Africa and the Head of Global Banking for Southern Africa. He was accountable for both the commercial growth and regulatory governance of the branch and the region. He provided strategic leadership across all aspects of the business, with a focus on sustainable returns, client connectivity, and a robust risk and control framework.

Muneer was also the CEO, Chief Country Office and Head of Global Markets for Deutsche Bank South Africa for five years. Before that he was the Co-Head of Institutional Clients Group (ICG) Africa (ex-Egypt) and Head of Global Emerging Markets in Africa (ex-Egypt).

Muneer graduated with a BSc Eng (Mining) and a Masters in Industrial Engineering (MSc Eng) from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Outside of work, he enjoys coding, getting lost in a good book, and cheering on his favourite teams in cricket, soccer and rugby.
