DawnChorus

Inspired by the African myth of Horus, commonly represented as a bird, this sculpture is a metaphor for progress, where a plethora of tiny parts come together to form a coherent whole - from chaos to harmony.

Dawn Chorus is the largest iteration in the Murmuration Series that is a tribute to nature’s choreography, when swallows mass together as they prepare to migrate, to perform sky ballet known as ‘murmuration’. Singer draws on the prin¬ciple of emergent behaviour and traditional thatching in the organisation of thousands of steel rods, typically used for security fencing, to create this symbol of freedom and transcendence.

Viewing the work left to right, one might see the figure taking flight. Viewed another way, it appears to be a bowing anthropomorph. This ambiguity is achieved because the figure is headless, placing the viewer at the centre, making the work more enigmatic. It is explosive and momentary like a crashing wave; while dynamically and delicately poised like a dancer; it may even be felt like a comforting hug. The artist sees at the same time catharsis and celebration.
