From Petrochemicals to Corporate & Investment Banking – A Journey of Purpose and Possibility

From Petrochemicals to Corporate & Investment Banking – A Journey of Purpose and Possibility

After 15 years in the petrochemical industry, leading teams across eight countries in both emerging and developed markets, Meli Mashinini made a bold and inspiring career pivot—joining Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) within the FirstRand Group. With a background in chemical engineering, supply chain planning and operations as well as a passion for digital transformation, Meli brings a unique blend of technical depth, strategic insight, and global perspective to the world of corporate and investment banking.

Reflecting on the transition, Meli shares, “It might seem like a leap, but for me, it was a natural evolution. I wanted to be part of something that directly shapes economies and communities—especially here in South Africa.”

Meli’s experience in supply chain planning and operations gave him a front-row seat to how businesses function end-to-end. From procurement and logistics to production and sales, he developed a deep understanding of the operational levers that drive performance. This insight now plays a critical role in how he approaches financial solutions—ensuring that solutions are grounded in the realities of business execution.

Having lived and worked in China, USA, Germany, and South Africa, Meli also brings a strong cross-cultural perspective. Navigating diverse regulatory environments, business cultures, and market dynamics has sharpened his ability to adapt, build trust, and deliver tailored solutions that resonate with clients across sectors. This global fluency is a powerful asset in corporate banking, where context and nuance matter.

What drew Meli to RMB was more than just the opportunity—it was the culture. He describes it as entrepreneurial, collaborative, and forward-thinking. “It’s a place where you’re encouraged to challenge the norm, take ownership, and innovate,” he says. Coming from environments where precision, accountability, and continuous improvement were key, he found RMB’s approach both familiar and energizing.

Meli’s academic journey also played a pivotal role in shaping his transition. His Master’s in Engineering Management helped him bridge the gap between technical expertise and business strategy—an invaluable skill when advising clients in complex industries. Meanwhile, his Master’s in Digital Business sparked a passion for technology and innovation. He sees banking as a sector at the forefront of digital transformation and is excited to help clients navigate disruption, unlock new opportunities, and future-proof their businesses.

“Joining RMB wasn’t just a career move—it was a purpose-driven decision,” Meli reflects. “It’s about using everything I’ve learned to help build a more inclusive, innovative, and resilient financial ecosystem.”

Meli says:

I cannot live without: Music! I have a broad range of genres from electronic (Little Dragon) to classical (Ennio Morricone). Thank goodness for streaming services!

In my free time you will find me: Spending time with my family and playing video games either on my PlayStation 5 or Rog Ally Z1 extreme

One of my favorite quotes: “Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice, and discipline.” – Jim Collins, Good to Great

One of my proudest moments: Integrating into Chinese culture during my time there as an expatriate.

I am inspired by: People that serve humanity unconditionally.

What the world needs more right now: Collaboration and cross-cultural insight

I am passionate about: Leadership, which I believe is a noble profession that helps others to develop and achieve their potential.
