At RMB we believe in the exponential value of teamwork, collaboration and shared goals. A good team, like a choir, comes into being when the separate voices work together to create a masterpiece which is better than any voice can ever be on its own. Enters the Mzansi Youth Choir.

RMB has been a proud sponsor of the choir since its inception in 2003 to give talented, underprivileged young students access to training and performance opportunities locally and abroad, alongside their academic studies.

“The Mzansi Youth Choir is particularly close to our hearts as it’s about so much more than the art of performing,” says Carolynne Waterhouse from RMB Corporate Marketing. “It’s about adding meaning to people’s lives. It gives the choristers, as well as their families and communities, a sense of dignity and purpose; something to be proud of. It has the power to transform lives.”

The gift of music

Since the choir was formed in 2003, hundreds of young people have passed through its ranks. Some have gone on to perform at international level, while others have launched impressive careers both within and outside of the arts. What they all have in common is a sense of discipline and commitment that is instilled in every single chorister at every single practice. Here they don’t only learn songs. They also learn all about collaboration and respect, perseverance and patience, listening and sharing.

World citizens

The choir has achieved amazing international acclaim, having performed across South Africa, as well as in Canada, Denmark, Russia, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The choir has also been a popular attraction at many of RMB’s Starlight Classics concerts.

The choir recently received a standing ovation at the Royal Albert Hall for its performance of Say Africa as part of the International Youth Choir Festival. The choristers even snuck in an impromptu performance outside the gates of Buckingham Palace!

The story of the Mzansi Youth Choir is about showing what's possible. It's about discipline, collaboration, character building and talent. Wherever this dynamic group of young South Africans go, they make massive impact – building the Creative Economy.
